Have you found your undergraduate studies especially interesting? Do you want to go further and gain a competitive edge in the workforce? Why not consider doing honours? Departments in the Division of Humanities are running information sessions on Honours programs during September and October.
Department of Politics and International Relations The Andrew Vincent Memorial Lecture was held at Macquarie University on 1 August at 7pm on campus at the Price Theatre Macquarie University, North Ryde. The lecture was presented by Professor Michael Humphrey from the University of Sydney. Professor Humphrey’s lecture was titled “30 years of Middle East Studies”.
Some of Professor Humphrey’s recent publications include The Politics of Atrocity & Reconciliation; From Terror to Trauma (2002), 'From Diaspora Islam to Globalised Islam: Changing Islamic religiosity and identity in the West' (2007), ‘Lebanese Ethnicities in a Globalising World’(2005), and ‘Australian Islam, the New Global Terrorism and the Limits of Citizenship’ (2005).

Division of Humanities After almost eight long years of research, development, design and production, Effy Alexakis' and Leonard Janiszewski's new touring exhibition - "Selling an American Dream: Australia's Greek Cafe" - will be launched at the Australian National Museum in Canberra on Friday 11 July. The socio-cultural history exhibition will be on display at the Museum until 16 November and will then tour to all states over a seven year period. The display features historical and contemporary photographs, oral histories, archival film footage and Greek cafe memorabilia. Effy and Leonard thank all their colleagues within the Division for their generous support in making the exhibition a reality, particularly those from Department of Modern History, and the Australian History Museum.
Division of Humanities The Graduation Ceremony for the Division of Humanities was held on Tuesday 22nd April 2008 in the Frederick Chong Courtyard, Building E7B commencing at 9.30 am. Thomas Keneally was the guest speaker at the ceremony.
Centre for the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature From Bennelong's 1796 letter to contemporary creative writers, Anita Heiss and Peter Minter have selected work that represents the range and depth of Aboriginal writing in English. The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Aboriginal Literature is published as part of the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature project. Published by Allen & Unwin, the Anthology will be available from 7 May following the launch by Hetti Perkins.
A groundbreaking collection of work from some of the great Australian Aboriginal writers, the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Aboriginal Literature offers a rich panorama of over 200 years of Aboriginal culture, history and life.
Division of Humanities The Division Prizegiving was held on Monday 21st April in W6A107. We'd like to congratulate all those who received awards and thank all who attended for their support of the Prizewinners.
Department of Politics and International Relations Geoffrey Hawker of the Department of Politics and International Relations was elected for a second term as president of African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific at the annual meeting of the Association in Canberra last week. Kathryn Sturman of the same department, who has recently submitted her PhD thesis, was elected to the executive also.
Department of Asian Studies In 2008, the Department of Asian Studies will be offering 2 new Arabic language units: ARB 110 Introductory Arabic A - 2008 Semester One They will consist of 4 x 2 hour classes a week.
