A cross-reference ("see above") is to another part of the same section or subsection of the same essay unless otherwise indicated.
References to the Bible, and to works by Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and other ancient and medieval authors use the traditional methods of citation by chapter and verse, book and chapter, question and article, etc. These divisions and subdivisions are indicated in most modern editions and translations. Generally such works are not listed in the Bibliography, but if references include page numbers the Bibliography gives the edition referred to. Since there are some differences between the Vulgate and other versions of the bible, Bible references sometimes include "Vg.", or give alternative numbers.
Modern works (except for those of Arnauld and Bayle---see below) are referred to by author's name and (when necessary) short title. Full titles and publishing details are given in the Bibliography.
Numerals in brackets after a page number, or after "a" or "b" (indicating the left-hand or right-hand column of the page) give line numbers (measured with a marked slip of paper from the first line of text). For example, "76(23)-77(14)" means "from line 23 on p. 76 to line 14 on p. 77"; "220 a63-b3" means "from line 63 of the left-hand column to line 3 of the right-hand column on p. 220". A numeral followed by a space (not by a comma or dash) is a page number. In "47 b47-48 a4" "48" is a page number. In "18 a11, b10, 15, 19 a3" "18" and "19" are page numbers, the rest line numbers; line 15 is in column b.
References to his Oeuvres (Paris and Lausanne, 1775-83, repr. Brussels, 1967) will be given by the short titles listed below. In this list the date is the date of publication unless it is enclosed in square brackets, and then it is the date of composition of a writing not published in Arnauld's lifetime. (For dates I rely on the editors of the Oeuvres; for the historical circumstances see the prefaces in this edition, and Jacques, Les Années, pp. 481-2, 660-6; on the edition see Jacques, "L"édition".)
