Acquisitions 2005 (1)

ACANS continues to acquire coins to support the research and teaching interests of the Centre and the Department of Ancient History. These acquisitions are primarily funded through grants from Macquarie University. A review of select purchases over the last five years can be found in the Journal of the Numismatic Association of Australia 15 (2005) 45-49.

The following is a selection of coins recently purchased.

 

Syria, Commagne, Zeugma; in the reign of Philip I (244-249 AD); (14.16g). Obverse: Head of emperor; AYTOK K M IOYLI ΦIΛIΠΠOC CEB.Reverse: Cult statue in temple with peribolos; ZEΥΓMATEΩN. ACANS 05A11.

 

Egypt, Ptolemy I (323-283 BC); silver tetradrachm (14.27g). Obverse: Head of Ptolemy I. Reverse: eagle on thunderbolt; BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY; within type, Δ. ACANS 05A3.

 

Euboea, Chalkis; 100-90 BC; bronze as (9.74g). Obverse: Hera with sceptre in quadriga; traces of ΧΑΛΚΙ/ ΔΕΩΝ. Reverse: ΘΕΟ/ΚΛΗΣ/ΠΑΥΣΑ/ΝΙΟΥ within wreath. Reportedly obtained near Thebes. Ex BCD Coll. ACANS 05A9.

 

Syria, Seleukos II, Theos (261-246 BC); Seleukia on Tigris; silver tetradrachm (16.23g) Obverse: Head of king. Reverse: Apollo seated on omphalos; ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ. From a hoard probably found in Syria. ACANS 05A13.
