Centre for Cultural History
Centre for Cultural History
The Centre for Cultural History was established at Macquarie University in late 2006.
Over the last five years the Division of Humanities at Macquarie has developed new strengths in the interdisciplinary field of Cultural History, particularly in the areas of feminist and postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality, literary history and critical theory. Our growing profile in cultural history is linked to the international growth of this interdisciplinary research area.
The centre is home to a group of projects undertaken by researchers at Macquarie, concentrating research efforts in the field. It also aims to be a focus for broader public discussion about the relation of the past to the present. Critical questions for cultural history include not only ‘Is the past ever really past?’, but ‘Have things always been as they are?’ Can the present and future be different?
The Centre for Cultural History hosts conferences and symposia, supports postgraduate students and research fellows, sustains international connections, and fosters interdisciplinary collaborations amongst its members and the scholarly community. It is the home of the interdisciplinary journal Australian Feminist Studies, and aims to stimulate a thinking community in Sydney and beyond.
