The Centre was established in November 2006, drawing on existing Macquarie University staff expertise and new appointments. The ICRC’s brief is to research and analyse the nature of island cultures in a manner that will assist local cultural activists and regional, national and multinational organisations to recognise the value of local cultures and to develop means of assisting their continuance, development and networking. The Centre is the current institutional host for SICRI (The Small Island Cultures Research Initiative), and Shima – The International Journal of Research into Island Cultures and offers MPhil and PhD supervision in island cultures research.
