The objectives of the Centre are as follows:

to establish a centre of excellence for the academic study of Island Cultures;
to undertake research on topics related to Island Cultures;
to support innovative teaching and the supervision of higher degree work in this field;
to undertake consultancy work of an academic nature;
to coordinate research grant applications for groups and individuals;
to work with island communities on research and development initiatives;
to raise funds for library resources, scholarships for students, and the short-term appointment of fellows and scholars;
to oversee academic exchange programs with the relevant centres and individuals
to conduct seminars on Island Cultures at Macquarie and in the wider communities
to inform and publicise Island cultures research to the wider community
to undertake any activities that further the objectives listed above;
