The Macquarie Japanese Studies Centre offers a variety of scholarships & grants to students in the fields relating to Japanese Studies. In 2010 it will be offering the following grants & scholarships:

Online Research/Resources Development Grant
Aim
The MJS Centre Online Resources Development Grant is funded by Tokyo Foundation. The primary purpose of the grant scheme is to support the development and maintenance of theoretically sound high quality teaching resources for the community.
Main targeted areas are:
- resources to foster intercultural thinking (eg cross-cultural account on global issues),
- Japanese language pedagogy or
- fundamental research that would offer theoretical foundation for future resources development (eg cognitive process in kanji recognition).
Tenure of Grant:
One year.
Amount of Grant:
Maximum $10,000.
Number of Grant:
One.
Eligibility:
- a member of the university holding a permanent or annual appointment,
- teachers in the community wishing to develop online resources related to Japanese language and culture.
Selection Criteria of Grant:
- The project should be original and innovative
- The project is soundly based in theoretical foundation
- The extent to which the project is feasible and applicable to practical teaching purpose
- The extent to which the budget is justified and appropriate
- Relevance to educational benefits in Japanese language/culture teaching
Condition of Grant:
- An applicant will submit a grant application to the MJS Centre
- Provision of grant will be determined by the Scholarship/Grant Selection Committee.
- The successful applicant will present the outcome of research through appropriate channel. (eg. journal, workshop)
- An approved grant may be spent for purchasing relevant software applications, the arrangement of teaching relief/a research assistant or any other research related expenditure. However, the grant must not be used for travel expenses or the purchase of major hardware equipment (eg. a computer, a printer)
- The applicant will be asked to produce 1) a research/expenditure report at the termination of the grant.
- A grant report will be supplied to the Tokyo Foundation (the sponsor of the scholarship)

Assessment:
The scholarship/Grant Committee will meet in late-November to review the application and allocate funds. Applicants will be notified by 21st December.
Postgraduate Certificate in IcLL Scholarship
General Information
The MJS Centre at Macquarie University offers scholarships to support teachers and prospective teachers of Japanese language and cultures who seek further professional development. The Centre invites applicants who wishes to explore new paradigm in language teaching – viz. Intercultural Language Learning (IcLL).

Condition of Scholarships:
The applicant must enrol in Postgraduate Certificate in Intercultural Language Pedagogy in Japanese program at Japanese Studies, Macquarie University. 2010 applicants apply online through the Universities Admission Centre(UAC). Applications open in September and the closing is end of October.

Criteria for selection:
- Evidence of leadership/initiatives in language teaching
- The extent to which the program is relevant to the applicant’s teaching career
- Relevance to the benefit of the community

BA Honours Scholarships for Academic Year 2010
General Information
The MJS Centre at Macquarie University offers scholarships for the promotion of sound high quality teaching and/or practice of Japanese Language and culture in the community.
We invite applicants with a research interest in:
- Japanese language and pedagogy; or
- Japanese area study or study on cross-cultural issues ( eg. International relations, environmental science, economics, sociology/anthropology).
Preference will be given to a research topic which is practical and can contribute directly to teaching development in the community. It is our hope that every effort our students make in understanding/exploring topics not previously studied will lead to better understanding between Australia and Japan.

Condition of Scholarships |
The applicant must enrol as a full-time student at Macquarie University. The applicant may enrol in a research program as a full-time student. However, an associate supervisor must be nominated from Japanese Studies Department. Priority will be given to B.A.(Hon) applicant. Where no suitable applicant is selected from the B.A.(Hon) category, applications from Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation will be considered. |

*Amount to be determined according to the program enrolled in. Where HECS or tuition fees are not applicable, a scholarship may be given as part support towards living costs.
(Note: The amount awarded to the recipients of the scholarship will not exceed the amount payable for tuition and HECS fees for the period of the scholarship.)
*Maximum period of extension of scholarship is three years.
