Higher Degree Research Commencement Program
In order to support students in their first year of research degree study, the University runs a commencement program, partly conducted at University level (Central Commencement Day) and partly conducted at Divisional and Departmental level. Following is a brief outline of the components of the program:
- Central Commencement Program
- Divisional Commencement Day (29 February & 7 August 2008 )
- Divisional Commencement Program
- Interview (half-yearly)
Regular participation in a Divisional Commencement Program is compulsory for all new research students. Please check the dates in the following schedules:
First Semester 2008 Divisional Commencement Program
Second Semester 2008 Divisional Commencement Program
Every postgraduate research student is required to present a DCP paper in their first year of enrolment (full-time students within the first six months of enrolment). The student’s supervisor(s) and at least one other academic of the relevant discipline will be present to provide formal feedback recorded in a written report on the student’s presentation. A schedule for DCP presentations will be set up at the first seminar session. For the first sessions we will also have a number of speakers to introduce students to library, copyright and ethics clearance processes specific to the Division of Humanities.
The presentation should take no more than 15 minutes and should be designed to be understood by colleagues outside your discipline. The central aim of the presentation should be to demonstrate clearly the focus, scope and significance of the research project.
Attendance at the Divisional Commencement Program is compulsory. If you have to be absent due to illness or other valid reasons, please notify the HDR Adminstrator Hannah Choi ( Phone 9850 6894 or email hannah.choi@mq.edu.au).
InterviewsYou will have an interview with a panel of three academics of your discipline in the middle of the year when you can report on the progress you have made with your research. Prior to your interview you should submit a brief progress report addressing the following:
- development of research thesis / thesis plan
- literature review
- review of methodologies
- timetable of research activities
Please contact your supervisor for details regarding the report.
The panel of interviewers will provide you with formal feedback, recorded in a written report. Please contact your Departmental representatives for details.
Should you have any queries regarding the Commencement Program please contact the Division Higher Degree Research Administrator: Hannah Choi (hannah.choi@mq.edu.au)
We wish you an enjoyable and productive start to your postgraduate research study!
